i saw this on COTH, and all I did was follow the link. I laughed when I saw Darren's face, as it was not at all what I expected. It wasn't until about an hour later that I realized what the charges were... and its really sad.

This tread has been stopped by the mods at the COTH board. The thread was a train wreck and was one of those threads that was going nowhere fast. If this is true, it is very sad for everyone involved.

I dont think it's very cool to publish Darrens photo and story on a public website. It's sad that this stuff happens to someone in out event community, but I dont think we need to throw them under the bus so publicly...golden rule here guys...

The above comment may be true, but it already has been published on a public website. This is simply a repost, and eventingnation did so with no additional (IMO unecessary)commentary about the incident, as was seen on COTH.

I think you loose your right to complain about people knowing about your dirty laundry once it contains something illegal you are caught for.

If he had (just for an example) commited a hit-and-run, or a robbery, or been busted for drug possession no one would feel it was "uncool" to publish it.

I think the article is well done for just stating the facts how they are and not getting into opinion, roumour, or anything else.

This used to be one of my favorite eventing sites but I have lost all respect for you for publishing this. This is sad and he doesn't deserve to be publicly humiliated.

Being that this story contains material of such a personal nature its is WRONG and in BAD TASTE to publish it on a public forum. A person should never have to face their HIV status being displayed for the world to see. This case is obviously being handled by the authorities, as it should be. Paul-I have never heard of an instance where Darren declined media attention or the spotlight, whether the reporting was personal or not. Furthermore, this is a public story about a very public figure in eventing, which makes unquestionably eventing news.

As sad as this is, I agree that it is eventing news. It's great to report on all the good news in eventing, but good reporting should cover the good, the bad, and the ugly. This situation would have come out somewhere else down the line--don't shoot the messenger.

Instead of vilifying Darren before the entire facts are presented in a public forum, perhaps we need to be compassionate and pray for him. Judging people out of hand can have some nasty repercussions. Furthermore, it seems a tad envious and self-serving for anyone not knowing the full story to do so.

While the job of the media may be to present the facts, with or without their slant, or for some other nefarious reasoning, the 'give an inch, and take 2 mile' rule seems to have slithered into our society.

It's great to be informed, but to do so in an effort to incite and rile and present an over-reactive story, and show the 'alarmist' side of each and every story is, quite frankly, BORING, and very COUNTER-PRODUCTIVE.

Darren lost all right of privacy by not telling his sexual partners about his being HIV positive since 2004-before he went to Athens. I am shocked that folks are upset at a magazine for publishing the facts of his arrest and for any pity for Darren. Our hearts go out to his many sexual partners and their families who he may have condemned to a life sentence or even to death.

This is extremely upsetting to hear.I have met Darren and he is a completely honest polite person. I honestly do not believe he would do something like this. I am friends with Darren and found this very heart-wrenching.

Meeting Darren...and being friends with Darren personally are two different things...

Yes, indeed. I think that those of us who have known, trained and lived with Darren can safely say that honesty is not necessarily his strong point. Knowing and just meeting someone are very different things.

We all should be sadden for both parties . It is a personal tragedy that it has happen to any one ,Darren and his friend included.
What we have gained here is an opportunity to be taught some thing by this mistake in judgement by both parties.

And this is an opportunity for every one to wake up about HIV ,AIDS and any one who is having sex or activities which might expose them to infection.
While it is sad ,it is a learning experience for all of us , a wake up call for our own behaviors.

And I having been a long time member of the equine community realize and lets us all admit we are not always the best behaved bunch in many way in general when it comes to honesty.

It is an opportunity for our young horse people to realize and be educated by this tragedy and it has the silver lining which has been brought out in to a very big light by Darren's already public notoriety a greater public awareness to what is going on a bit behind the scenes in all Equine / any community's behaviors ( NOT A COMMENT ON GAYS But JUST SEX).

And it will be moment in time and realization we will always remember as why we need to take a extra step every time we choose to have a partner.

We will know , since we know Darren so publicly , that it dose happen to real people, people we know as being strong athletic healthy looking , who we really know and thus if we are not careful it could happen to us too.
If we are dishonest with ourselves and do not always protect our selves.

And we really need to make informed choices about what and who we choose only after seeing the proof in tests and the actual behavior of those we choose to be this trusting and close to.

We can not be , as many have said be judge and jury on this, as we do not have all the facts so just wait that is what law enforcement and courts will discover and decide on.

But the take home message is this can happen to any one of us too . IT CAN HAPPEN IN DIFFERANT WAYS OF TRANSMISSION , SO PLEASE START BEING CAREFUL , DO NOT LIE TO A PARTNER , DO NOT GET CAUGHT UP IN THE MOMENT , AND DO NOT CHEAT AND COME BACK HOME TO SOME ONE WHO LOVES YOU ENOUGH TO BE IN A TRUSTING RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU .
We all have enough down falls in life , we do not need to make life harder on our selves or the others around us.

And there is some difference between full blown aids and HIV positive status in regards to one condition and to mix up the two at this time is a public disservice and could be slanderous .

Transmission wise it dose not make a difference you can get it from some one with either one I believe (if I'm wrong sorry).

SO far reports found indicate the partner has not yet tested positive for HIV. And this time line also says it has been some time since last contact so hopefully he is safe now and past the period of time it might manifest.
So best case scenario no one was harmed phyically , mentally possibly yes with fear... but fact is now everyone knows about Darren's aledged status now and we can all act accordingly around him in regards to our own free choice to be involved or not with him on any risk level we feel comfortable or uncomfortable with and that is what is important we can now chooses wisely .
As if he was unable to face it for what ever reason ...now this whole publicity thing has done it a job we are protected by the knowledge ... so give him some space he is human and not the first, (to not face a hard truth.... we all do it time to time), person in history .... this has some sever ramifications yes for some people and any one possibly involved including him ....but we are all out of the danger now in the future from his behavior as he will not be able to hide it any more, so he in fact has been naturalized as any public threat.
As you would have to live under a rock now not to have some idea about his status.

So please take the gift in this and heighten your awareness to your own behaviors ,as he has set a lead example here of how not to handle it and as awful as we may feel for him or the friend on either side .

It is theses two guys mistake, the gift they are giving us , that has re-educated us again in this big way on this subject and has offered a big educational wake up to our younger horses people and handed us adults a big wake up call publicly and that is the big picture we should get from this and learn from start believing it is still out there! And it is still in all groups of people; young, middle aged, straight , not straight , bi ,married,single, people in old folks home are getting it for gods sake from each other!!!

It is out there and no one has immunity from it . So protect , test , and start behaving with your brother or sister in mind too.

Let Darren go thur what he has to here legally and get on with what he can with his life , he is by this chapter in full public veiw has done us all some good and is probably no longer in any way a public threat on this behavior .
He is still an excellant trainer and coach!
He has never as long as I have been around him done any thing that I would as a parent and seeing his customers kids with him that I would believe was in any way out of line.

He dose have informed customers as to who he is and in no way has done any thing that I have ever seen as being some thing I would fear for a young student well being in his charge .

And all the adults/ parents around him are well educated and do not delusion them selves as to his behaviors in private at all.

And is it not up to the parents to guide their children as to what actions of others to see as good to be following or not followed in any party they allow them to interact with examples and thusly so parents should come to / be present at minors shows /lesson and be participating any way.... as no trainer /coach is a babysitter.
This should be true of parent involvement at a level where they know ....at hockey trip's, gymnastics etc... parents should if they have kids be involved with activity's and people who are around there kids period in general be present to a level to circumvent or dissolve any questions they might have about a person in contact with kids and I'm more surprised most parents do not get more involved as I train horses too and teach kids and I often feel I 'm more of a guide than some of the parents as they could care less and are just glad to find a sitter for there kids so they do not have to do ant thing with them . This is in no way saying he should be watched I believe he is OK to have minors around as student that is my point.
So he as a trainer is not a person to boycott or as a coach of students as riders. Or as a trainer product of trained horses.

His ability to ride and coach has not really changed much , his motor skills are very good and he OK on the horses only a slight difference (his shoulder did look weaker but it could be just like you or I after an broken rib or two, is there from how I knew him before but he was 26 yrs then riding one of my horses , hell I'm not as good as I once was phyically now at 45 yrs either.)
And I saw him only 5 months after he had accident in an Event I helped him at which he won so I'm sure he gained back allot more strenght / riding wise since.
I personally found him a bit shorter in words and temperament than before and can be frustrated easier than before when dealing with personal issues ( as we have had some over the years so my coming to help, I did test his resolve a bit over our unresolved arguments and business) I could see that ... so ....I gave him benefit of the dought and i SPOKE WITH A DR. WE BOTH KNOW AS TO WEATHER IT WAS OR WAS NOT JUST HIM BEING Darren AGAIN AND WE DID HAVE SOME QUESTIONS ....??? at the time I asked.

It has little to do with his ability to ride or teach as far as I could see, but remember the motor skills involved with riding and the marriage of motor involvement or feeling it makes metal recall of info and telling it to another easier and how to call it up from ones self to teach / train this, makes teaching easier as the two are so intertwined in the mind. And it is not so much so as with a decision skills of an ABSTRACT nature or concept that have no action physically directly attached to it in the mind.

I would not penalize him on his ability to service customers as some have sugestd, with lesson or training needs if job is being done to his customers sadifaction. He has a business manager who could address any other issues for him.
And by making an speculative emotionally charged circus out of his currant problem now will be another really hard thing for him to have to deal with right now and could affect his performance to his currant customers ,students etc.... and to much stress can cause a person to have more on one's mind than safe to be on horses, so back off a bit .
And he is still Eventing right now.
And while his actions may aledgely be wrong he dose not need to have a nother misshap becuse of to much stress.
And yes every EMS worker and Event manager is sure to be safe around him now, so get over it . We already have delt with these issuies some 20 yrs. ago with an olympic diver ,so he is not the first person to be in sports posssiably infected .
So think abit about how far we want to go ahead in this speculative media game it has an effect on more than just him , and it will hurt others who did nothing wrong.

So slow down a bit . He dose have customers and sponsors and he dose need to be able to stay working for those parties until which time he has completed those obligations to customers, so do not make his life so hard right now ,that others in his scope of touch suffer because of this behavioral legal issues.

As he has some other responsibilities in life to those he services/ works for right now and I'm sure as a past customer , if I had a horse with him now I would like his mental and physical state to stay up enough to keep doing what I hired him to do!
So please think a little further down the road than your out rage towards him ...he has employees who depend on him for a pay check right now.....he has customers still depending on him and sponsors who invested in him , try to let the legal system sort this out ,chips will fall were they belong and then these people, parties will make there choices accordingly they are not dumb ,we do not all need to force it, it will happen how it should or not in due time.

And we do know from movie stars and other very public partys in the world, being a public figure ,we all know you do have the possibility of attracting people who want to latch on and who if they do not get what they want, they can find ways to make your life miserable so lets just see what come out of this naturally thur investigation and courts.

And do not make the association with this event tarnish some of the good he has done for some people with there lives, horses , and furthering of there own riding whether for sport or professionally as many people paid to be with his team and many people have earned skills from being around him in horses ,so do not take this away from those who have earned or paid for a horse to be trained by him , and some note of accomplishment or value , by learning from him in some ways...as they still earn the right to say they were good enough to work for , ride with an Olympic Rider , or have a good product coming from his work if they in fact do in a horse and your hurting all those who are completely innocent in that regard by taking it away from them, by lumping it all in to one bad pot with his aledged bad action in this case, separate out his action here from his work . And yes you can argue he started the hurt for his customers or sponcers ,but we can stop making it worse..!

So lets all of us take this unfortunate event and lets make it in to a learning experience for every one and stop making it entertainment .
He has had some hard things happen to over come and it maybe has just been too much for a person to deal with as we think some one should have.
I know he is not always a perfect person too as I 'm not either all the time nor are you the reader of this , some are worse than others but we all have weakness we do not deal with at one time or another.

We should be trying right now not to take sides as the facts are yet to come fully ...so instead should we figure out for ourselves a way we can learn from this sad event and behaviors on both parties ,not how bad any one is ...

And no I do not work or train with him and I have nothing to loose or gain . Just know him and spent enough time around him to know him a bit better than some and less than others , and we are not close.

But another perspective, might help those around him who are not involved but might be considering him as a trainer, for consignment or as an instructor or might be some one considering working for him or him as some one to do work for them, not to fear, but to go ahead and still use him or not base soley on what he can do for you. But just leave his work relationships out of this alagation ,at this point as to boycott him just based on this poor judgement in this case is wrong at this stage .
It is not what Darren is completely about and he can do a good job still with horses and students and his horses at shows do have the physical appearance and conditioning to show the public the sponsors products work well .

So lets not all destroy the many good things he dose represent, because of this .
As the fall out of all the opinions with out all the facts is affecting more than just him ,it is many many years of countless people, businesses and horses out there who have some little claim to credit from either being a customer ,student, horse trained by , sponsor of ....ect...and all these parties have a vested interest in how badly his name gets defamed by this so try to stick to letting it settle out with courts and fact and stop talking about him so much as it is damaging everyone .
As you hurting more than him.....and those who did nothing also need some protection for there efforts / hard work / being a student in there associations, as they had nothing to do with his alleged behavior at all. So do not destroy what they have paid for or earned thur blood sweat and tears of learning to ride or this horse business or any other way they might have gained credit in the world or horse business by being one small part of team Chiacchia. Do not shame them too by this, allow all the young riders who trained under him to remain as intact as possible in there identity of having learned from one of the world best......see it could be your kid who has now lost all there identity in there riding ....( parents you now need to step in and speak with your kids as you have an excellant oppertunity to discuss how HIV and AIDS can be transmitted and put this hard lesson in perspective so the do not wounder or feel a drift by this alagation if it is some how related to them allow them to keep there pride in accomplishments intact seperate the action form the horses) just because of one aspect of a persons behavior is bad or wrong.... dose not make how he taught some one how to jump wrong or take care of a horse wrong or a product wrong ,as kids identify with there accomplishments lets not make this such a fuss they feel dragged down too for example.
So think a bit about how you speak and present your personal opinions in public on this as there are more parties involved in this before opening your mouths to much .

So where is the edit? I'm sure that this input was no ruder, no more crass and probably spoke the more truthfully than some of the other comments being made about Mr. Chiacchia. I hate to burst anybody's bubble but Darren really doesn't lie.

Let's talk about responsibility and the manipulation of the law for one's personal gain over something as stupid as a lover spat and guess what, the story suddenly takes on a new twist.
