An incredible moment and a special Rider Profile

We've all seen the magical photo by now... and I'm sure many of us were just a tiny bit jealous of the adorable girl getting to pet Rolex superstar Mandiba.  Kudos to Josh Walker for capturing this moment, which really explains what eventing is all about.

EN has learned the identity of the now-famous Pony Clubber, and we are pleased to introduce her to you in a very special edition of LL Rider Profile.

FEATURED RIDER:

Name: Keely Bechtol

Age: 8

Pony Club rating:
I am in Bluegrass Pony Club, I am a D1 and I'm going to try to rate up in the fall.

What was it like serving as "dressage gate crew?"  Were you nervous in front of the crowd?
It was fun, I got 15 autographs on my cap! I wasn't nervous and I got to see people I met last year and made some new friends.

Who was your favorite horse(s) or rider(s) that you watched?
I was rooting for William Fox Pit, Oliver Townend and Karen O'Connor.

Can you describe the moment in the photo?  Did you ask Karen if you could pet him, did she offer?  What do you remember most about Mandiba?
Ms O'Connor asked me if I would like to pat Mandiba, he was sweet and gentle.

Did you get to watch the rest of the event?  What was your favorite xc or sj memory?
My favorite was watching Mandiba on cross country because he became my favorite after patting him!

What is your own pony like?  What are your accomplishments/goals with him?
My pony is a mare, her name is La Dee Da, she is almost 13hh. I like to do dressage, play mounted games, jump & trail ride with her.  Last year we won D1 Rally, she did a great dressage test!

Anything else you'd like to share, about yourself, Rolex, or Pony Club?
I would like to compete at Rolex one day in the Prince Philip Cup and then when I'm older do Rolex Three Day Event.
I think I am really lucky that I got to work at Rolex and that I have a pony.
I take riding lessons at Scheffelridge Farm.
I love Pony Club, it teaches me how to do things on my own.

I think this is my favorite rider profile to date!!! Keely sounds like a terrific kid and I loved hearing that she felt lucky to have a pony (and a darn cute one too!) because some kids take it for granted. Hope to see you riding at Rolex one day Keely!

Keely, I hope you ride your whole life, and when you get a little older, I fully expect to be cheering you on over the Rolex cross country course. Thank you for being so polite and such a great dressage gate person. And would you thank your parents for raising such a wonderful little girl, and for giving you such great opportunities to have a pony and participate in Pony Club, and volunteer at Rolex. I know you don't drive a car yet so the parents had to be helping out. They're pretty great people, too. Go eventing!

Keely, you are an inspiration to young riders everywhere. Keep it up!

Keely, you are a terrific kid. I hope to see you ride around Rolex some day.

I got a picture very similar to Josh's and it was one of my favorite moments from the whole weekend. Good job, Keely! You are a lucky kid to have a pony and to help out at Rolex!

Keely - I am very jealous you had the opportunity to meet Mandiba and Ms O'Connor! You are a very luck girl!! You did a great job on Thursday and Friday and your pony is absolutely adorable!
Good work and good luck Pony Club levels in the fall!

WOW!! What a great kid!!!

that is what pony club is all about ! :)

Keely thank you for volunteering. Our sport depends on generous people donating their time--regardless of how old they are!

Keely, thank you for volunteering. We'll be looking for you at Rolex in a few years. In the mean time, have fun, learn a lot, and take care of your very cute pony!

My mum and I were crossing guards on Xc, and were out in our posts 7ish in the morning when most riders were walking their course a last time. Karen O'connor was the only one who said hi and thanks for volunteering. She's so nice! And this little girl is my biggest hero!

Karen and David O'Connor are class acts! They have always welcomed young pony clubbers into the stabling area when allowed. They are truly an inspiration to the up and coming riders of tomorrow.

My son was a 6 yo "helping" jump judge and David was having a hard go of it on one of his young ones. The horse threw a shoe at our jump and my son found it. We took it to the stabling area and you would have thought it was made of gold after the fuss David made over it being returned. My 4 ft son felt 10 feet tall for the rest of the day. Thank you O'Connor's!
