Jersey report

Perspective is not what I was looking for when I went into the start box at Jersey Fresh on Saturday. I was shooting for the clear round. I was determined to reach my goal and my final qualification to get me to Bromont 3-star, but perspective is what I found. I had another bitting "situation" that resulted in a run-out at the skinny toothbrush out of the water because Nike would throw his head when I tried to steer or hold him to a line, resulting in him not seeing or locking onto the fence. Luckily, Nike understands and enjoys his job so the rest of the combinations I could keep a loose contact and he drew to the skinnys and corners.

Until this year, I never realized that being successful brought so much more intense pressure than just getting around or being mediocre. I always thought that as soon as you figure out how to win or be successful that you get more comfortable, more confident. Once I realized that I had a phenomenal horse with potential to be extremely successful and it was completely up to me to show everyone who he is and who he can be, I was a bit overwhelmed with a sense of apprehension that I wouldn't/couldn't give him the ride he deserved. This weekend I realized that this was something I really needed to work through. Although I would MUCH rather be heading to Bromont next month, I realize that this "break" in Nike's schedule will give me the time to sort through my competitive toughness, mental and emotional. I have no doubt that if Nike had a different bit that didn't irritate him, he would have jumped around clear and at least close to the time. I have no doubt in his ability and can't wait to get to another CIC and prove it.

To everyone who has supported me and Nike and my other wonderful horses: I can't thank you enough and I'm excited to encourage and cheer you on in the way you have for me. Good luck and keep checkin out the coolest site in Eventing. -Hannah Sue

A sense of humor is a great salve.
Loved the air vest "test".
Keep riding that roller coaster of life.
Thank you for writing.

Having had a horse with a tricky mouth I can appreciate your struggle. It is incredibly frustrating but I am impressed by how philosophical you are about it and your horse is lucky to have you.

Hey experience is what we get right after we need it. This is a nice horse and you don't need to "show" everyone. There is good pressure and bad pressure. Bad pressure is determined to get a clear round -- good pressure is confidence in your ability and your horse's training to get around clear. There's a difference. This is a green horse. Give him some direction and experience and the bit thing will go away. :)

I saw the runout and felt so bad for you. Thank you for explaining what happened. It looked like you were having a great ride otherwise, so make sure to include the positive aspects of the event in your "perspective"!

Thanks for sharing your experience with us Hannah, I'm sure it's not very fun to write about a day like that. You're a great rider and Nike is a great horse, I'm such a big fan!

Hannah,
My daughter events now, and hopes to be up there in the "big time" one day. However, before she became an eventer she ran track. She waas 16 and on a national list in Javelin. She was like ranked 13th. When she first started throwing Javelin, she would get a good throw and coach would say a great job. As she progressed, it became more and more an expectation to further her own record, or not just win, but do so by yards, instead of inches, or feet. She went to college out of state on a full athletic scholarship, went through two years on a team, qualifying for olympic trials, winning medals at major competitions. But it was never enough, after our house burnt down n her first year of college, and she missed practice that day, and got reamed about her head being in the wrong place, it because no fun for her, and a job. So, if you don't mind an old lady giving you some advice.....Take a few deep breaths, and then go HAVE FUN. You are an amazing rider, and done some amazing things. Don't try to "proove" anything to anyone, just go out of the box, and have fun. I am seeing so much burnout on this sport, and scrambling to make the money, get the sponsorships, have the string of horses....but remember why you sgtarted, remember the rush of the x/c, and the fun of just having a good dressage test. Good Luck and have fun the rest of the summer!!!

Hanna, please reread all of the above comments. Take a deep breath, and smile deeply, you have people who care about you, no one expects you to be ready for Bromont. Be ready for your horse, at every phase of your development as a team. Have fun all along the way. You are developing you and Nike as a marvelous team. Smile, and be proud.

You have always been an amazing rider and someone with such an unbelievable spirit and natural happiness to them. I admire your attitude, never forget that part of you and your natural talent with horses will always keep you on track. Just keep doing what you're doing and you will never let anyone down because in your heart you will know that you gave it your very best and Hannah Sue's best is simply awesome! Love ya girl!

Hannah,

With each ride, each competition comes a greater knowledge of each other, a greater communication, greater sense of being a team - You are an excellent rider, he is a horse with tremendous talent and huge heart. This minor setback is nothing in view of what the team of Hannah and her "Little Red Ferrari" can accomplish! You Go Girl!

Just going to write, whatever problems I may disagree with you, you’ve provided a great insight into my birthplace every day.

Stock market are falling around the world on the first full trading day since the US Government credit rating was downgraded in an unprecedented move on Fri.
